Your support and contributions enable us to improve the lives of Single Moms and their children.
In 1996, Congress’s enactment of "welfare reform" explicitly discouraged states from offering poor mothers chances to pursue post-secondary education. The law, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, called for “work first,” requiring states to push poor mothers into immediate employment. Female heads of households, arguably the most vulnerable in our country, were suddenly told to "become self-sufficient" – and were prodded to do so without access to an educational ladder.
Whether providing financial assistance or organizational support, ESM stands with our partners to provide programs which promote dignity for all Single Moms. Additionally, our partners commit time, energy and expertise which is invaluable. Our partners understand the importance of continued partnership to support the journey of Single Moms.
Words of affirmation are encouraging. Single Moms often struggle with loneliness. However, when a mother is struggling to do it all, she often wonders if she is doing anything right. Affirming positive achievements encourages Single Moms to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Sending a text, making a phone call, or a card simply to say she is doing a great job.
